What Unfinished Business Do You Have?
LeBron James, “I’m a guy who believes in unfinished business.”
What unfinished business do you have? Many of us have unfulfilled dreams and till death that is the way it remains. However, for one NBA basketball player LeBron James, he had a plan and was totally focused, he was determined to conclude his unfinished business. There is no denying that he went through a cycle of being the most loved and then the most hated player in basketball. Despite the barrage of criticism and abuse, LeBron was on a mission and undeterred to win an NBA Championship.
The Decision
Born December 1984, James played high school basketball and even then the media predicted his future as an NBA superstar. In 2003 LeBron was drafted by the Cleveland Cavaliers and was one of their premier players. However, in 2010, LeBron made the decision to transfer to Miami Heat, which has since famously been referred to as ‘the decision’. With this single announcement, LeBron became the most hated player in the NBA and his popularity went from 78% positive to 81% negative according to a Sports Illustrated poll.
LeBron unwavering in his commitment said,
“You can’t be afraid to fail. It’s the only way you succeed – you’re not gonna succeed all the time, and I know that.”
Unfinished Business
During the off season, LeBron worked on perfecting his game and his determination paid off with Miami Heat winning back to back NBA championships in 2012 and 2013. Then in 2014 LeBron decided to return to the Cavaliers stating,
“I’m a guy who believes in unfinished business.”
When LeBron first left the Cleveland Cavaliers he realised he could not fulfil his dreams of winning a championship, hence his decision to transfer to Miami Heat. He was on a mission to win titles and that was the goal. The aim however, was to always return to his home town and win a championship.
“Without the experiences I had there, I wouldn’t be able to do what I’m doing today.”
His decision to return to the Cavaliers was shunned yet LeBron remained unphased and totally focused on his game. The Cavaliers managed to make it all the way to the NBA finals but were beaten by the Golden State Warriors. During the 2015-2016 season, the Cavaliers were again fortunate to play in the NBA finals against the Golden State Warriors, however, this time it was a stunning comeback with the Cavaliers defeating the Warriors 93 -89 to secure their first NBA championship.
After the game, LeBron said,
“I’ve had the goal for 2 years since I came back to bring back a championship to the city.”
LeBron clearly had defined goals, was totally disciplined and unwavering in his commitment. Some could argue as an athlete your time is limited and therefore, time is of the essence to make your mark. However, we are all bound by time and unless we make a conscious decision to conclude our business, it may be too late.
I feel like sports and real life share so much in common. I loved the analogies you made. Thanks.

Thanks themrrodge for your comment. Athletes have time focused goals and therefore, need to be disciplined which is something we can apply to our own lives.
